A brand-new kitchen, a brand-new bathroom: two rooms guaranteed to generate excitement, especially now. In the last decade, new products and innovative styles have changed the appearance, the substance, even the role of these rooms. Among the changes: whirlpool baths, European cabinetry, solid laminates for counter tops, sinks in a profusion of shapes and colors, and the expanded use of ceramic tile.

Maybe you’re planning a remodeling job to incorporate these changes. If so, plan to spend $1,500 to $2,000 for new bathroom fixtures, $5,000 to $7,000 for a complete revision by a contractor, and $15,000 or more if you want to expand your current 5′ x 8′ cubicle into a “super bath” complete with a large whirlpool tub, stylish tile work, and the best cabinetry. Kitchen remodeling can be just as expensive: New cabinets alone are $2,000 to $4,000, and a complete redo costs from $8,000 to $15,000 or more. The good news is that when you sell your home you’ll recover 70 to 100 percent of the cost of adding a new bathroom, 45 to 55 percent of the cost of remodeling a bathroom, and 60 to 100 percent of the cost of a new kitchen Baths

The typical bathtub is 16″ high, 29″ to 32″ wide, and 5′ long—a length that accounts for the standardized 5′ x 8′ bathroom.

Bathtubs are also made in other shapes and sizes and are available with accessories such as whirlpool pumps, flexible shower hoses, and grab bars. The three most common basic materials are cast iron and stamped steel—both ceramic coated— and glass fiber-reinforced plastic.

The cast iron tub is very heavy, solid and durable, and the most expensive of the three types. The stamped sheet steel tub is about half the weight of the cast iron tub and noticeably more flexible.

Cabinets

With some 6,000 manufacturers of kitchen cabinets in America today, you can count on one thing: variety. There’s a wide range of styles, materials, quality, and price to choose from.

Cabinets are either factory-made or custom-made. Factory-made units may come from large, nationally (or internationally) known firms or a local shop. Unless they are custom ordered, they will be made to standard sizes. Standard sizing, such as the height of base cabinets, assures a fit with dishwashers and other standard appliances. The advantage of factory-made cabinets is that you can see what you’re getting before you buy it. One sign of durability is the performance seal of the National Kitchen Cabinet Association (NKCA).

The advantage of custom-made cabinets, on the other hand, is that your kitchen may not accommodate standard sizes or you may not fit with standard sizes. If you’re shorter or taller than average and want counter tops you can work at comfortably, custom cabinetry offers you optional cabinet and counter heights and sizes. Custom cabinetry also offers you the option of using special woods or unique designs. Before you hire a cabinetmaker to do a custom kitchen, be sure to visit his past work.

Traditional wood cabinets are still two-thirds of the cabinetry sold today. Those of the highest quality are called “furniture grade.” They will be built with %” hardwood, mortise-and-tenon joinery, braced corners, the best hardware, and dovetailed or V-lap joints connecting drawer frames to their fronts. As you go down in price, you’ll find the wood to be thinner or replaced with particle board. Interiors will have rougher finishes, shelf and drawer hardware will be plastic instead of metal, and drawer components will be connected with staples and glue.

European cabinets were introduced to the American consumer in the late 1970s. These cabinets are known for their “clean” look of plastic-laminate doors covering the full face of each cabinet. Behind that look is a different construction method: There is no front frame on the cabinet, on which the door is hung with visible hinges. Instead, the door is hung directly on the cabinet with concealed hinges. And drawers have noticeably more space.

Granite countertops are currently the number one preference among home owners for installing in their kitchens and bathrooms.

For countless years, marble has been the material of preference for kitchen countertops. Unfortunately, it is actually permeable and it is much less obtainable nowadays. This has triggered a tremendous increase in the price tag on marble. A type of man-made marble is mainly utilized these days in kitchens and bathrooms. It is less expensive and is water and stain proof. Granite countertops have developed into an extremely popular alternative for use in kitchens as well as bathrooms. There is, apparently, a vast selection to the quantity of granite readily available. On the other hand, granite simply is available in a restricted variety of colors (typically dark) as well as textures, based on where it comes from. At this time, granite is brought into the United States from quarries all over the world; for this reason the range of colors and textures is expanding.

Granite is sold by the linear inch (not the foot), centered on a 2-foot-wide standard countertop size. Presently the cost may differ, based on the caliber of the granite, from a low of about $7 an inch to a high around $25 an inch. That doesn’t include the price to have an edge cut into it, which can cost a few dollars per inch extra. (Edges will be glued-in layers to boost thickness and next cut in numerous shapes.) Furthermore, if you prefer a wider section of granite (in excess of 2 feet wide), the expenses rise considerably. And then, obviously, there is the expense of installment, which often can cost a few more dollars per inch.

Benefits of Granite Countertops – Granite is nature’s ideal counter top. It has been developed naturally over millions of years and for that reason, has a hard, typically impervious work surface, even though it has to be sealed. You’ll be able to drop items on it, beat it, whack it and, unless there is a problem within it, you won’t harm it.

Drawbacks of Granite Countertops – You’re going to get a small seam wherever the various slabs of granite are placed together. Furthermore, in the event the granite should fracture due to the fact it wasn’t installed correctly, there is nothing that you can do about this with the exception of replacing it. Installing granite requires a professional, which means you will not likely need to be undertaking this yourself.

You will have to seal granite immediately after it is installed to prevent having water along with other elements leak directly into it and discolor it. You will probably need to re-seal it on a yearly basis. This isn’t a tedious or complex procedure and it will only take a couple of hours. Keep in mind; you will need to take care of the surface area all of the time.

Kitchens are the heart of the Nashville home. They need to be family friendly and functional. In a world where climate change and the environment are daily concerns, how can a kitchen be remodeled without causing harm to the environment. This article will examine some of the environmentally friendly kitchen remodeling trends, currently in use today.

When remodeling a Nashville kitchen, several basic environmental issues need to be addressed. The issue of resource conservation, should be high on the list. Resource conservation considers how the world’s resources are used and conserved for future generations. As consumers of energy, the energy efficiency of the appliances and lighting, installed in the kitchen, should also be of concern. As responsible cities encourage citizens to reduce, reuse and recycle, how the household waste stream is managed, is a high priority area, when remodeling.

The world’s most precious resource is water. How a household manages its water, and how much water is used, are essential choices in a remodel. When remodeling, where the items used in the remodel are sourced, is worth considering. Are recycled or reused products involved in the remodel? By reusing furniture from other rooms or locations, less waste is generated, and the cost of a remodel can be reduced. When new materials are used, is the source, environmentally sustainable? There are materials available, which come from managed sources. A lot of these products are fast growing, and are less harmful to the environmental stability of a locality.

When considering the energy issues of a remodel, several issues need to be examined. What type of appliances are needed to improve the functionality of the kitchen? Also what energy source is required by those appliances? As micro-generation is becoming more fashionable, having appliances that run on electricity may be very helpful.. If a micro-generation plant was included in a remodel, the electrical appliances used within the house, would be able to run on free energy.

When choosing appliances that are oil or gas powered, thought needs to be given to energy costs constantly rising, as the oil and gas reserves are diminishing. All appliances chosen, should have a high energy efficiency rating, to reduce green house emissions and costs to the Nashville consumer.

When designing the kitchen, space should be made to incorporate waste stream management solutions. By including separated recycling containers, within the cupboards, the kitchen will appear more pleasing, and will also be functional. The incorporation of waste stream solutions within the kitchen remodel will enable recycling and composting to become an everyday response to waste management.

Environmentally friendly kitchen remodeling trends, when examined with an open mind, can help to make a kitchen more friendly and functional. By employing some of these trends, a positive difference can be made to the environment, and the benefits to the household will also be positive.

Cabinets are an often overlooked element of the home aesthetic. Cabinets are an indispensable part of any home. Anyone who has lived in a place with too little cabinet storage space will agree that people don’t know how valuable and useful cabinets are until they don’t have enough of them. As a homeowner, consider all of the places in a home where cabinets are beneficial, let alone necessary. The kitchen, bathrooms and laundry room come immediately to mind, but cabinets have an even greater utility than storing dishes and linens. Good cabinetry can enhance and transform nearly every room of the home, like a home office, game room, or custom entertainment center. All of these places can be improved by the addition of cabinets. Cabinets are the best way to store everything from pantry goods to files to video games in such a way that everything remains at your fingertips without creating messy clutter in the home.

This homeowner’s guide to cabinetry is designed to teach some of the basics. Covered in this guide are some of the most common material choices for cabinets, tips on cleaning and caring for cabinets and a brief exploration of cabinet refinishing rather than outright replacement. Because cabinets can be an expensive home improvement job, some homeowners find it more cost effective to refinish the cabinets they already have. In most cases, refinishing is a viable option, after making a few considerations.

Cabinetry Materials
Cabinets are made out of wood, with maple, oak, cherry, birch, and hickory being the most common woods. Some styles of cabinet are coated with a material like Thermofoil, which adds durability to wood and makes it easier to clean. Maple is a bright wood, a good choice for a light, airy workspace like the kitchen. Of course, maple can be finished darker to give it a deeper tone. Oak is a timeless classic wood that compliments its surroundings with warmth and depth. Cherry is an elegant hardwood with lovely natural hues. Cherry mellows with age into a darker formal tone. Birch is a versatile wood that can compliment the sparse class of an urban loft or blend with the simple rustic feel of a country cottage. With the right stain, birch can achieve nearly any look. Hickory is a unique and strong wood with natural color variations than can enhance the warmth and welcome of any kitchen. Depending on the tone of the stain, hickory can take on a natural rugged appearance or be imbued with the deep rich wood tones of a family mansion. Also, woods like oak and birch are available in a more rustic style of cut called quatersawn. Quartersawn oak and birch is cut in such a way to reveal the wood grain in a more country aesthetic.

Caring for Cabinetry
Fresh cabinetry entails a lot of carpentry work, hence some dust. Once new cabinets are installed, dust all the exterior by wiping with a damp cloth. Dust a little bit of the cabinetry at a time, letting it dry before moving on to the next section. Find a wood cleaner or polish that is free of wax, silicone and petroleum solvents. These chemicals can create unwanted wax buildup or deteriorate the cabinets’ finish. Murphy’s Oil Soap is an excellent choice for wooden cabinets, both old and new. It builds up a deep shine while cleaning and protecting the wood. Do not use a kitchen dish cloth to wipe down or clean the cabinet exteriors. Dish cloths often contain remnants of detergents or grease that can damage or spot the finish. For daily care, be sure to wipe up spills and water as soon as they happen, particularly around the sink. Do not drape wet towels or dish cloths over cabinet doors to dry. Over time, drying towels and rags this way can lead to water stains on the cabinet doors. Also, avoid the excessive heat of self-cleaning appliances like ovens and dishwashers. Drastic or rapid heating and cooling of cabinet exteriors can lead to warping of the wood.

Refinishing
Many homeowners need new cabinetry but can not afford the entire process. Refinishing existing cabinets is a fantastic alternative to ripping out the old ones and rebuilding. Refinishing cabinets is much faster and less expensive than installing new cabinetry. Old cabinets are removed, their old finish is sanded off, including the removal of minor damages and spots, then the cabinets are resealed and stained before being freshly reinstalled. Refinishing cabinets gives the homeowner a lot of style choices, too. A new stain alone, for example, darker or lighter, can transform the tone of the entire room. Take note: Before starting a refinishing job, be sure to examine the interior of your cabinets, particularly the cabinet floors, which can be prone to rotting. If the cabinet interiors are in a bad way, refinishing is not a good option. It will be necessary to install new cabinets.

Countertops are one of the most prevalent features of kitchen space. Because they are such a central part of kitchens, the size, color and material of countertops can really spruce it up.

Kitchen remodeling is a large and important job for any homeowner. Kitchens attract the most traffic of any room in a home. With that in mind, it is a good idea to choose high quality components when outfitting your kitchen.

What is the best material to use for kitchen countertops? Rather than try to cover them all, this guide to kitchen countertops deals specifically with two materials. We will weigh the pros and cons of two different materials that have good reputations for countertop quality. Those materials are granite and richlite. Granite is a classic stone component. While Richlite, like paperstone and other such products, is a 20th century synthetic material made from pressed and baked paper fiber.

Granite: Pros and Cons
Granite is king of the hill in terms of kitchen countertops. When a homeowner doesn’t have to make any other considerations – like price – granite is the material of choice. Granite sets the bar for kitchen elegance, functionality, and beauty. The beauty of this age old stone enhances the beauty of even very modest kitchens. Granite is a countertop that will not depreciate in value. In fact, granite countertops are considered home improvements that increase the overall value of a home. Granite is sanitary, being resistant to bacterial contaminants. Granite is also earth-formed stone, created from heat and pressure, so it can handle hot pots and pans. Furthermore, granite is easy to clean with mild detergent and warm water. Granite comes in thousands of colors and is nearly as hard as diamond. Granite is so hard, that it will dull knives if you cut directly onto the stone.

On the other hand, granite is expensive. It is true, as granite becomes more widespread it comes down in price. Granite is a porous stone, so it requires some maintenance. Some types of granite absorb stains if they are not sealed periodically. For optimal stain resistance granite must be cleaned and sealed one or two times per year. If you seal granite before cleaning off a stain, that stain will become permanent. The good news is that newer sealants are very easy to apply, reducing the necessary maintenance time for granite. Because of granite’s hardness, it can crack if it is installed incorrectly or stressed. Because of its weight, granite requires additional labor and structural support to install. Often installation costs significantly more than the material itself. Granite is quite permanant, so if you get tired of the color, tough luck. Removing a granite countertop entails replacing the entire cabinetry. Granite is also naturally variable, with differences of appearance in each slab. If you want a totally uniform look thoughout the kitchen, granite may not supply that uniformity.

Richlite: Pros and Cons
Richlite is a representative brand of composite and recycled materials. Other name brands for paper composites are Paperstone, Shektastone, and EcoTop. Some manufacturers use glass and resin composites, like IceStone and EnviroGlas. The most common composites are made of wood pulp combined with resin, pressed into a slab, and baked into a rock hard solid. Richlite only uses woodpulp from managed forests, so it is eco friendly. Richlite does not need sealing, but rubbing it with an oiled sponge every so often eliminates signs of wear. Richlite ages very well. In that regard it has been compared to leather. It looks great when it’s new, it shows wear while it’s young, then it develops a smoothness and beauty as it ages.

Though Richlite ages very well, it is not scratch resistant. Composites like Richlite will will show wear, but develop a patina over time, achieving a warmth and smoothness that stone can not offer. This composite is heat resistant, but only up to 350 degrees, so taking a pot out of the oven and putting it on the composite countertop may leave a scorch mark. Some colors of Richlite may not be UV stable, so if your countertop area gets a lot of sun, check to see if the color you like will fade in the sunlight.

Of course there are far more than two options available for kitchen counters. The other materials include engineered quartz, kitchen glass, soapstone, laminate, ceramic tile, marble, slate, acrylic and copper. Each of these materials has its pros and cons. When choosing a countertop material, there are many factors to take into account, including price, appearance, and durability. By learning to assess the advantages and disadvantages of the various countertop materials, you can make an informed decision and choose the material that best suits your needs.

Richlite counter top products are making their way into middle Tennessee. Richlite is a company that produces durable, green and natu ralcounter top products. Their secret lies in an environmentally sound manufacture philosophy.

Richlite counter tops are a green-classified, beautiful and earth friendly alternative to cold hard stone and impersonal solid plastic surfaces. Richlite counter tops add utility, life and warmth to any workspace or counter top area. Whether office, workbench, bathroom or kitchen, Richlite has the color, size and style to fit any need. Richlite owes a lot of its versatility to its revolutionary building material, FSC-certified and other recycled paper fibers.

Richlite began using resin treated, pressure-baked paper fiber in the 1940s to supply Boeing with materials. Later in the 1950s, before manufacturing counter tops, Richlite also began producing their unique material for the marine industry, building boats. Over the decades several industries have realized the virtues of Richlite paper fiber based surfaces. Today Richlite also produces the material that builds professional skate board ramps, commercial food service work surfaces, and counter top surfaces for a wide variety of residential applications. This revolutionary material has proved itself time and time again for over half a century. Today, homeowners everywhere can take advantage of the strength, style, and quality of Richlite counter top products.

Richlite counter tops are great for kitchens because they are extremely durable, not to mention heat and stain resistant. Richlite counter tops are excellent for bathrooms and workspaces because they have a sanitary quality and require very low maintenance. They bring a soft, comfortable tone to any room, in a way that a stone or laminate surface can not.

Richlite counter top surfaces can be catered to a broad range of design tastes. Richlite counter tops are made primarily of post consumer paper fibers that are treated with a phenolic resin. The fibers are formed into layers that are cross linked to the layers above and below them. Then the resin “paper cake” is cured and baked into a solid, permanent single piece of rock hard Richlite. The process of treating and baking long, cross linked paper fibers creates counter top sheets that are as elegant and attractive as wood, but hard as stone. Because of Richlite’s unique manufacture process, these counter top sheets can be customized for extended cantilevers and long spans, eliminating seams in your counter top.

Richlite counter top products are now available in middle Tennessee, through professional contractors like Nashville’s Building Company Number 7. Call you local contractor and ask about the details and benefits of Richlite counter top products.

Kitchen Remodeling is the single most dramatic improvement you can make to your home. An old adage says, “The kitchen is half the home.” Of all the human traffic in a home, at least half of that traffic is in the kitchen. Give your kitchen attention worth its value to your family.

A skylight over the eating area will attract the household to gather and eat together. Imagine the possibilities of a kitchen island with an overhead pot and pan rack. Many families find that remodeling their kitchen adds years of functionality to their beloved home. Change that old electric stove to a gas stove. Renew the pleasures of cooking over an open flame.

Your home is your biggest investment – so choosing the right kitchen remodeling company is an important decision. Read about different remodeling companies. Find an experienced company, with reliable products, service, and peace of mind. With some vision and resources, you can give your kitchen a custom-designed look tailored to your needs.

Kitchen remodeling projects can range from surface changes, like kitchen cabinet resurfacing to tear out/replace kitchen remodeling, like a new gas range, breakfast nook and a skylight. Since kitchen culture is so developed, you will find a large selection of changes available for your tired kitchen. For example, there is a large variety of popular door and drawer styles, with coordinating hardware and a large selection of kitchen cabinet colors and wood grains. Countertops are available in a variety of material choices, from classic granite and marble, to more affordable laminates.

You might find many stages of a kitchen remodel are tasks you may be able to do yourself. All the same, do not remodel your kitchen without the guidance of a professional. You may find it relatively easy to replace your oven, for example. But you will be in over your head when it comes time to tile your floor or perform skilled trim carpentry.
There are various modifications that add use and dimension to your kitchen, from trash compactors to beautiful resilient stone tile floors. So many kitchens are installed according to prefabricated specifications of low cost design. Why should kitchen design be left to tract housing architechts? You know your kitchen best, and the things it needs. With your vision and the help of a professional contractor, you can elevate your kitchen to a level of design that matches your kitchen’s intense level of use.

The first step of any kitchen remodeling is planning. Gather information about your kitchen. What modifications or renovations would you like to perform? Are you making a few surface changes? Or are you ready to tear out the kitchen and revitalize the space? The depth of your project will determine the time and materials you will need. All kitchen remodeling professionals have a list of available services. Make a list of which of these services you think you would like to perform.

A sample list of kitchen remodeling services looks like this:
* Cabinet installation
* Countertops – corian, granite and marble
* Cabinet reconditioning and refacing
* Tile backsplash
* Cabinet hardware
* Design service
* Flooring – tile, marble, laminate and hardwood
* Finished trim carpentry
* Custom undermount sinks
* Custom kitchen lighting

Next, make a realistic budget projection. How much do you want to spend on your kitchen remodel? How will you finance? Most homeowners finance their home improvement projects with a home equity loan. A home equity loan is a good choice for financing a kitchen remodeling project. Mainly, because the project will increase the value of your home. It will reinforce your investment.

Finally, when your plan is made, find a talented and informative contractor. Call around your city and get on the phone with a contractor that answers your questions and will come over to your home to give a free estimate. With a bit of homework, you will discover a remodeling professional you feel good working with. Hire the services of a licensed, bonded, and insured company. Make sure the contractor you choose is a talented renovator and a good communicator, able to keep you informed.

After you’ve planned your kitchen remodel, budgeted your project, and found a reliable contractor, you will be ready to make your first cut. Once the process is over, you’ll have a glorious new kitchen. You can enjoy the satisfaction of renewing the heart of your home. Good luck!
